A VISIT TO THE FALLS

I walked down the river's side
for as long as I could go.

I stopped to look around and breathless I was,
speechless and electrified with emotion.

Such benevolence from nature I have never seen before.

Between moody waves of silver
and a torrential smile,
the river seems to say good bye,
the water runs free
and right downstream it picks up speed
with a degree of impatience for the unknown.

Fearless to find out the outcome of its course.

Suddenly beneath the edge of the river's bed
an endless rainfall of beauty
lays down a carpet of sounds
and music plunges into a mist of centuries
where fallen rocks
bear in silence the
pounding force
of the falls.

Niagara Falls, NY., circa 1994

aguantan calladas
el trepidante flujo
de las cataratas.
