This morning on the patio
Thirty or more finches feed
Some fly up to the bird feeder
Spilling from it thistle seed

They look like shadows in the dawn
Early when they come to eat
I wonder how on this cold morn
They don't freeze their little feet

Sheets of white cover tomatoes
To protect them from the cold
The sweet peas too are well covered
This cold front is getting old

For us who are used to heat and sun
This is rather hard to take
Very few fishermen head out
For a day upon the lake

I wonder how the snowbirds are
Who thought that they would be warm
Camping in the campgrounds here
I bet they are so forlorn

Twenty-eight degrees out-of-doors
It is much too cold for me
Looking forward to summer's heat
That's for sure and certainty
