First Snow

waking this morning, everything bright
I looked out the window
and saw that it had snowed through the night

first snow of the season on the ground
no tracks to be seen
with snowflakes falling all around

odd how the world becomes so hushed
as if The Artist
had covered the noise with His brush

a Cardinal lands on the sycamore tree
his mate not far behind
looking for cracked corn and waiting for me

time to get up and brave the cold
to feed these hungry birds
before the day becomes too old

first snows don't ever last very long
before they go away
so I'll enjoy this one like a winter song
